ELLEN’S APOLOGY AND RETURN TO TALK SHOW

[SOUNDBITE – ELLEN DEGENERES]

“How was everybody’s summer huh? Mine was great! Super terrific.”

The eighteenth season of Ellen premiered today and with it, came an array of awkwardness from its host Ellen DeGeneres. Ellen’s opening monologue addressed toxic workplace claims but was met with poor responses from fans and critics who expressed their distaste with the hosts handling of the elephant in the room by making light-hearted jokes about the situation.

“The truth is I am that person you see on TV. I am also a lot of other things. Sometimes I get sad. I get mad. I get anxious. I get frustrated. I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress. I am especially working on the impatience thing. And it’s not going well. Because it’s not happening fast enough.”

The 62-year old talk show host continued on in her monologue to a virtual audience in the studio and acknowledge how she knew she was in a position of privilege and power.

“I know I am in a position of privilege and power and I realise that with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”

But after the monologue, the host acted as straight-faced as possible, powering her way through what could only be said was a shaky and awkward season premiere.

“If you’re watching because you love me, thank you. If you’re watching because you don’t love me, welcome!”
